We are keen to hear the views of everyone in our local community so if you would like to take our short survey SURVEY NOW CLOSED. Many thanks to the 80+ members and non-members who took part.
New Clubhouse Project
South Petherton Tennis Club is now submitting funding applications and launching a donation site shortly to progress the new clubhouse project. We are keen to improve facilities for wheelchair tennis players as currently there is no access to the clubhouse or courts 1 and 2 for those players.
Below is a video demonstrating the current access limitations at the clubhouse.

Tennis Club Fundraising to replace 55 Year Old Clubhouse
South Petherton Tennis Club has launched a project to raise over £70,000 to replace their existing clubhouse which has stood on the current site at the Recreation Ground since 1964.
The Club which has over 160 members of all ages from 5 to 85 is looking to provide modern facilities to include a toilet and changing facilities as well as disabled access to increase playing opportunities and membership.
Natalie Grinter, Somerset Coach of the Year 2019, coaches over 100 juniors on the club’s courts through weekly coaching sessions and holiday camp courses. When a child needs to visit the toilet Nat currently has to interrupt classes and take all children to the facilities at the Bowls Club. Nat explained “If one child needs to go to the toilet I have to stop the class while we all walk over to the Bowls Club which is not ideal when trying to help children learn.”
Improved disabled access to the clubhouse and courts Is vital if the Club is to improve opportunities for wheelchair tennis, an area that coach Natalie is keen to develop. “ at the moment wheelchair tennis players can only access one court which clearly limits opportunities. Access to all courts will mean more wheelchair tennis at the club.”
The new facilities would also benefit Somerset League tennis players. With 6 teams playing in the leagues throughout the year, there are over 100 players from across the county who visit the club each season. These players often require changing and toilet facilities as they arrive straight from work.
The health benefits of tennis are widely documented including boosting brain power, reducing stress, weight loss, preventing disease, improving flexibility, agility and balance. It is a sport that can be enjoyed across all age groups and South Petherton Tennis Club boasts members from across the age groups.
The Club is looking to raise £70,000 to replace the existing clubhouse with a purpose built facility similar to those of other clubs in the area. £20,000 has been committed from the club’s own funds with a further donation by the South Petherton Community Enhancement Fund. The Club will also be conducting further fundraising activities as well as looking into grants from Sport England, the Lawn Tennis Association and South Somerset District Council.
New Clubhouse Project - Full Proposal Now Available
We are now pursuing a project to replace our aging clubhouse with a facility fit for the 21st century. We hope this will encourage more juniors and wheelchair tennis players.
The full proposal is now available to download, having been presented to the Parish Council by Gary Maynard; Chair of the New Clubhouse Committee.
Congratulations to Natalie!
All members would like to congratulate our coach Natalie Grinter for winning the award of County Coach Of The Year for the second time.
Natalie contributes tirelessly to the success of our club and we are incredibly proud to have her as a coach and member. Well done Nat!

Mens Team has a tough start after promotion
The first men's match was a tough start against Chard A who had been relegated into the division we have been promoted to, so they were always going to be a handful!
We drew on sets but lost 32 to 33 in games in an evening of really enjoyable tennis where both pairs won 2 and lost 2.
Thanks to Jameses B and McI, and to Richard C for their efforts.
Our second match was another titanic struggle against Misterton; this time saw each team win exactly 40 games! Regrettably, we didn't win them in quite the right places, losing two tie breaks and finishing 4 8 down which is an unlikely bit of arithmetic, but that's how it was.
Thanks to Nigel, Dave, James B for a valiant innings.
April Club Tournament Result
We had a very blustery afternoon, actually gale force winds at time! There was a stalwart eight of us, who fought against windblown balls for an incredibly hilarious afternoon of tennis!
Congratulations to winners Beth and Terry.
South Petherton Mixed Top Their Division
Congratulations to Charles F. and team for coming top of Division 3 in the Winter Mixed League.
SPTC victory at Yeovil Ladies Doubles
Congratulations to Annie, Pam, Sue and Tanya for a successful outing at the Yeovil Ladies Knock-out Tournament 2018.
Annie and Pam narrowly missed out on a semi-final place, coming second in their group.
Sue and Tanya reigned supreme, winning the competition overall! Well done ladies.
Club celebrates a successful Summer season
4 of our 5 South Petherton teams in the Yeovil and District Lawn Tennis League have come top of their divisions!
Ladies A top the Ladies Doubles League overall, and Ladies C will be promoted next season to division 3.
Mens and Mixed will also be promoted, to divisions 4 and 2 respectively.
Ladies B finish with another win
Congratulations to Beth, Natalie, Sarah and Zena for an excellent result in the final match of the season against Ilminster B. They won by 6 sets to 2, bringing home 8 points for the win.
Ladies B will be moving back down to Division 3 next season.
Mens A assure top position
The mens team secured a solid win against Yeovil C yesterday evening. Dan and Charles swept all before them, losing only 6 games in 4 sets. Graham and Matthew made heavier work of it, not finishing their first set until after the other pair had finished 2!
Graham and Matthew managed 2 sets and a tie-break for a 7-3 win, giving them 9 points in total.
It was a great evening of tennis against a lively bunch of blokes.
Ladies B take first win in style
A strong Ladies B team took on Ilminster away yesterday in cooler conditions than we have experience of late. The team were on excellent form and came away with a full 10 points.
Congratulations go to Sarah, Kate, Beth and Zena for turning the tide and bringing home an important win.
This means that Ladies B will move off the bottom of the table, and with 4 more games still to play we're in a great position at this point in the season.
Mens team still top despite loss
A riotous match at home against Ilminster saw SP Mens team tieing on games at 43 each. Unfortunately they didn't fair so well in their customary tie-breaks, losing 3 out of 4 for a result of 5-4 in sets to Ilminster.
Captain's thanks go to Nigel, Dave W. and Graham for their solid work against a determined opposition.
SP Mens are top of the table with a game still in hand above nearest contenders Wincanton.

Mens team continue good form
After their first defeat of the season to Wincanton, in a tough game with 3 tie-breaks, the Men's team bounced back with another win against Ilminster. In a match with yet more tie-breaks, they took 3 of 4 to win 9 - 4 overall.
Mens team continue promotion momentum!
The Men's team were away against Somerton last week. They had a real battle with two tie-breaks (as is the custom!) and deuces reaching double figures in the hottest conditions so far.
They emerged tired but victorious at 9 - 3. Thanks to Graham, Christoph, Paul and James.
Ladies B suffer another loss to Chard B
The weather was excellent for the ladies away match at Chard. The tennis was also excellent but they couldn't quite manage the win, coming away with 3 points to Chard's 8.
Mens team still top after 10-1 win
Our Mens team played at home against Sherborne E this week and had a resounding win 10-1, confirming their unbeaten position at the top of their devision.
Sherborne brought new-comer Rhys for his first leaue match; at just 15 yrs of age we think we'll be seeing a lot more of him in coming years.
The team deployed serious firepower with the pairing of Christoph and James B, who overwhelmed both Sherborne pairs. Matthew and Jame McI slogged through a 3-setter, taking it in the tie-break (as is becoming a habit now!)
Ladies B draw on sets with Weymouth A
A hard-fought match tonight at home against Weymouth A had to be separated by counting games won after Ladies B drew at 4 sets all. Weymouth took the win by just 39 games - 36. A great improvement on the first match, onwards and upwards!
Congratulations Paula and Charles!
Another great tournament this weekend, with Rosemary introducing an interesting new format. Winners Paula and Charles took away a bottle of wine each, well done!
Mens team remain top after 3rd victory!
New member Graham stepped in at the last minute to help Matthew, Dave and Charles to a 10-2 win against Yeovil this week. The match had two tie-breaks (it's becoming an habit!) and the men held on, enjoying their time on Yeovil's bright blue courts. Well done!
Date is set for End-of-Season dinner
SAVE THE DATE! Our annual dinner, when tournament trophies are officially presented, will be held on 17 November at Frogmary Green Farm. A very delicious dinner awaits you! Further details will be available shortly.
2018 Knock-Out Competition Draw Available

Ladies C fall to Sherborne
Unfortunately our C team suffered a 3 - 9 loss to Sherborne on Tuesday. Well done for gaining those 3 points ladies, and congratulations to Sherborne.
Ladies A continue their winning form
South Petherton Ladies A team won their match on Friday against Somerton by 10 points to 1. Another strong performance.
Mens A take it on tie breaks
The men's team won a very close match at Wincanton on Friday with every set going to a tie break; all of which we won!
It was extremely closely fought, won by 41 games to 37. Dave W and Charles F are particularly commended for their nerve in taking the last tie break 13-11. A great result.
Ladies C win again!
Our Ladies C team continued their great form with a win against Yeovil B on Wednesday. It was a close match-up on a lovely sunny evening, with a final result of 7 points to 4.
Keep up the good work!
First week of the season: League Results
Ladies A and C teams started strongly in week 1 with excellent performances against Sherborne and Bridport respectively. Both teams came away with the win; well done ladies!
Ladies B struggled after promotion to Division 2, with a defeat at the hands of Misterton. Congratulations to Misterton Ladies.
The Summer League season has started!
Our Mixed team kicked off the Summer League with an away match against Martock. We were lucky with the weather, but not so lucky with the tennis. Congratulations to Martock on the win.
Good luck to all other teams!
Sophie and Terry win first tournament of 2018
We had 20 players for our first tournament of the year - a record so far!
Well done to new member Sophie, and to Terry, who won the most games overall and each received a voucher for Tims Wines.
South Petherton Tennis Club has been named as Benenden Tennis Venue of the Year.
Congratulations and huge thanks to our coach Natalie Grinter for her hard work this year, and well done to the committee for maintaining our fantastic club.
